Why a Roof Pipe Boot Can Leak

A pipe through the roof needs a seal around the pipe and a water-shedding base in the covering. When one part fails, a small opening can let water follow the pipe or roof layers before it appears indoors.

The collar and base have different jobs

The collar closes around the pipe. The base integrates with shingles or another covering so water flows over the roof rather than beneath it. A split collar, loose base or failed lap needs attention to the actual connection.

Sealant over the visible crack can leave an unstable base or damaged adjacent layers unresolved. A repair can require replacing the component and opening enough surrounding roofing to rebuild its laps.

The surrounding roof sets the repair boundary

Workable covering, a compatible replacement and sound deck and flashing connections let a local repair end in sound material. Brittle shingles or wet wood can enlarge the work. A small ceiling mark does not establish the exact opening or the repair extent.

At Parkville Roofing Co, a free inspection is a useful way to start with the roof itself. Learn more about roof flashing repairs.
